Savage Serial Numbers Rifle
By Robert (Bob) Greenleaf Since its introduction in January of 1958 the Savage Model 110 rifle has had its fans. A bit unusual in design and construction, it has.
If you have a letter in front of the serial number ( A-B-C-D-E-F-G-ect) then I can give you that information, if it has only number,it's a lot tougher, but with more of a description, it can benarrowed down.
Model 99 Savage Serial Numbers
Savage starting using a letter as a prefix in the serial numbers in 1969, so if your Dad bought it in the late 70's it was either used or new old stock. They still pop up on occassion NIB. The date of manufacture for your rifle would be either 1967 or 1968. Mad Dog should have enough numbers in that range to give you the exact year. Inside the oval, Savage stamped the letter 'A' together with other numbers which are apparently inspector's numbers. On many Model 99 rifles, this “oval” is indistinct or difficult to read as are the letters and numbers inside the oval. On my own late model “EG”, serial #709XXX, made in 1953, only the upper case letter “E”.
Before World War II, all Savage model 4 rifles were made with beautiful hand-carved walnut stocks and checkered grips. The only other gun in my collection that has such fine carving is a $1000.00 Sako. If your gun has checkering, chances are its an early issue, probably before 1940. I just found one of these beautys in my local gun shop for only $65.00! Needless to say, I pounced!

I have three pre-WWII Savage rifles (a Model 3 and two Model 5's). They all have serial numbers. Remove the takedown screw and remove the barrel/receiver from the stock. Look at the bottom of the receiver on the right side for the serial number. That's where mine are.
